LEADERSHIP IN ACTION

3 & 4 October 2017
Cititel Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Co-organisers

  • Introduction
As the education industry gathers momentum to meet the expectations of the country’s desire to be an education hub in the region, the number of institutions of higher has been growing in numbers. Several issues had been raised but basically it is the quality of the competitive edge that these institutions need to develop to help realise the Ministry’s mission.

For the year 2017, enough issues had been gathered to look at various specific niche areas and CWAM has identified that the theme related to ‘leadership’ would be of great interest. More significantly, it would be to capture the living examples of prominence in leadership – ‘Leadership in Action’.

Developing a series of cases in this area for the purpose of training to unleash the potentials of top managers of the numerous institutions in the country would be within CWAM’s capabilities. CWAM therefore would like to initiate a move towards organising an international Conference to develop the much needed cases in the industry.

Developing case studies for use as training material for the potential managers of the institutions of higher learning has been viewed as current and impending. The cornerstone of leadership has been the experiences in adversity that leaders had to face to develop their potentials in harnessing the environments they worked in to develop their competencies in leadership.

We have several retired Vice Chancellors and Presidents within our midst from both the public and private universities who would gladly share their experiences through story telling of the challenges and predicaments they had faced as they led their institutions to become extraordinary success stories and much admired endeavours.

The Conference can provide the platform for these agents of change to relate their stories which can be captured as undocumented, primary source material for case studies. Their sharing of the experiences will form the building blocks that can then be transcribed and become the basis of the case research, highlighting unique talents so relevant in leadership studies. Five former Vice Chancellors and Presidents of higher institutions of learning will be invited to share their experiences.

The main purpose of the Conference is to provide case writers with an opportunity to exchange ideas and share experiences related to case writing for publication. Both first time case writers and seasoned case writers are encouraged to attend this Conference.
  • Case Competition — Call For Cases
Besides the narratives of the hallmarks of leadership, in conjunction with the Conference, it has been customary to invite writers to submit original written cases (preferably in an Asian setting) from all disciplines as in business, education, hard and social sciences and others used for training, to participate in this Case Competition as an additional incentive for capturing the interest in the Conference.

To further reinforce the practicalities of leadership, the focus for the Case Competition could be on cases relating to elements of leadership.

The organising committee will select three to five winners to receive the following awards:
    • Prize money of :
    RM3,000: 1st Prize
    RM2,000: 2nd Prize
    RM1,000: 3rd Prizes (x5)
    • Selected cases will be published in any of CWAM’s publications or Putra Business School (PBS)’s Asian Journal of Case Research.

  • Report On The Opening Ceremony Of The Sixth International Conference
By The Hon. Datuk Dr. Mary Yap Kain Ching
YB Datuk Dr. Mary Yap Kain Ching, Deputy Minister of Higher Education opened the Sixth International Conference on Case Writing at 9am, 3rd October, 2017 at the Hotel Cititel Kuala Lumpur. This International Conference had been organized by the Case Writers’ Association of Malaysia (CWAM) bi-annually starting from 2006. The month of October had been designated as the month for the Conference and each time the theme of the conference changes to reflect the current interest of the subject matter which is to enhance the writing of cases for teaching and learning purposes. The conference was attended by faculty members and students and delegates from the various Universities, both public and private as well as interested individuals and trainers.

In her welcoming address, the Hon. Deputy Minister of Education said it gave her great pleasure to meet the speakers as well as writers attending the Sixth International Conference on Case Writing as well as writers participating in the Case Writing Competition, which is incorporated into the conference. The Case Writers’ Association of Malaysia (CWAM) had organized this conference with institutions of repute such as Academy Kepimpinan Pendidikan Tinggi (AKEPT), PUTRA Business School (PBS) and Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM). CWAM was set up in 1986 to encourage and to participate in any activity that would contribute towards the development of case writing and eventually cases in Malaysia with a truly Malaysian focus.

YB Datuk Dr. Mary Yap reflected on the country’s desire to be an education hub in the region that had led to an increase in the number of institutions of higher learning. Several issues had been raised but basically it is the quality and the competitive edge that these institutions needed to develop to help realise the Ministry’s mission. Leadership is significant and the theme, “Leadership in Action” has been deemed very appropriate as good leadership in higher education has never mattered more than now especially “with increases in tuition fees, concerns over international recruitment, widening access pressures, not to forget the challenges of competing in a globalised research and teaching market and the new challenges of 4IR”, she said. Many academics had come into higher education because of their "passion for their subject" rather than the thought of becoming a manager, but they cannot ignore the importance of leadership succession. “The question is whether we have put a lot of thoughts into what makes a good leader in the higher education sector”.

The Deputy Minister of Education applauded the intent of the conference which was to invite former Vice Chancellors from both public and private universities who would gladly share their experiences through story telling of their challenges and predicaments they faced as they led the institutions to extraordinary success stories and much admired endeavours. The conference can provide the platform for these agents of change to relate their stories which can be captured as undocumented, primary source materials for case studies. Their sharing of the experiences will form the building blocks that can then be transcribed and become the basis of the case research highlighting unique talents so relevant in leadership studies. Besides the narratives of the hallmarks of leadership, several case writers have been asked to transcribe the talks of these eminent speakers into cases for the training of future leaders. AKEPT has been very active in incorporating leadership case studies within their leadership modules meant to train the second echelon leaders for higher education institutions.

AKEPT has played a key role in sponsoring faculty members from public universities through the Case Writing Grant Scheme (CWGS) to attend Case Writing workshops in writing cases that could be used for the teaching at the universities. These cases had been submitted for the Case Writing Competition which is another feature of the conference. The Putra Business School has been sponsoring prizes for the case writing competition for the past four years. The Case Competition itself could be the catalyst for the proliferation of Malaysian cases in the future.

She ended by stating that she was very pleased that CWAM, AKEPT. PBS and USIM are actively assisting in such areas as case writing competitions, publication of cases, case writing workshops and evaluation of new cases submitted as well as to acquire eventually the function of an Asian Case House. The Deputy Minister said in her concluding remarks that it was time for the country to establish the Case Clearing House to support the growth of the country as an education hub and rightfully supported by the Ministry of Higher Education.
