  • Introduction
The Third International Conference on Case Writing was jointly organised by CWAM, Open University Malaysia (OUM) and the Graduate School of Management (GSM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) on November 8 & 9, 2011 in Kuala Lumpur. The theme of the conference was : Innovative Case Writing Techniques that Facilitate Interactive Teaching and Learning: Emerging Trends.

The conference was timely because the government and ministries such as the Ministry of Higher Education had launched various programs and provided support to encourage the increase in the availability of local case studies for teaching and learning purposes. Various universities had supported such programs by encouraging the formation of case writing clubs, research fund allocation for case research, and increasing the budget for training in case writing.

The culture of case writing had gradually gained momentum. Lecturers and trainers had realised that writing case studies was different from writing research and consultancy reports as well as academic journals. Efforts would be intensified to develop skilled case writers to produce local case studies in various sectors and industries. The conference focused on innovations, especially in the communication sector and its associated technological linkages. The trend in developing the use of cases in other fields such as the pure sciences was also emphasized.

Experts and case writers from the medical, civil engineering and legal sectors were invited to share their experiences at the conference. The two keynote speakers included Professor Garry Clayton, Professor in Sustainability Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth and Professor Martin M. Laurence, former Visiting Professor at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). The other speakers included Dr. David Asirvatham, Director for Centre for Information Technology at University Malaya; Dr. Rozanah Ab. Rahman, Associate Professor of Law at the Faculty of Economics and Management, Universiti Putra Malaysia; Dr. Wan, specialist in Cytopathology at the Hospital Serdang, Selangor; Dr. Bujang Bin Kim Huat, Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering of Universiti Putra Malaysia; and Mr. Mano Maniam, management trainer, founding member and past Deputy President of CWAM.
